Alcohol Treatment: Are the 12 Steps Still a Viable Treatment Option?

In recent years, a large number of substance abuse rehab centers have opened, and many of them proclaim to have the latest and greatest treatment modalities, replacing so-called “outdated” alcohol treatment plans.

At 12 Palms Recovery Center, there is one method of alcohol treatment that will never be regarded as “outdated,” and that’s the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

In fact, 12 Palms Recovery Center uses the 12 Steps as the center of all of their alcohol treatment programs. In place since 1939, the 12 Steps have helped hundreds of thousands of alcoholics and addicts achieve quality long-term sobriety, and the staff at 12 Palms Recovery Center sees absolutely no reason to mess with success, despite claims to the contrary.

The 12 Steps provide a plan of action, starting with building a foundation based on honestly, hope and faith. Without having a solid foundation built in place with the first three steps, it’s nearly impossible for an addict to build on that foundation. Understanding powerlessness over your addiction, combined with hope that a power greater than yourself can help you with your addiction, and having faith in that power to lead you to a life in recovery are the steps that are absolutely essential to long-term sobriety.

Having put the foundation in place, it’s time to build on that foundation, and each client at 12 Palms Recovery Center is actively encouraged to build on that foundation with Steps 4 through 9. These steps are a series of action steps designed for each addict to confront their actions and behaviors while they were actively drinking and drugging, and to deal with them through a series of steps that helps to cleanse the past and pave the way for a brighter future.

The final steps—10 through 12—are maintenance steps, designed to ensure that each addict in recovery has a series of checks and balances that they can live by to maintain a quality life in sobriety, also including service to others and giving back what was so graciously given to them by others.

Yes, the 12 Steps are over 70 years old, but 12 Palms Recovery Center believes that the time-tested alcohol treatment programs is still the best option available for a chance at quality long-term sobriety.
